Route 66 Map
 |
"The story of Route 66 starts over a century earlier when a young country began to grow westward. Old trails, blazed by mountain men, were generally all that existed for the immigrant wagon trains that followed shortly after." As the automobile came into vogue, a series of disconnected roads that followed from these trails were all that was available. "By the 1920s the Federal Government finally created a road system. In 1921, A law was passed, requiring states to designate primary roads to be included in a state highway system. These roads would be designated U.S. highways. Cyrus Avery, a successful businessman from Oklahoma, now known as the father of Route 66, was charged with establishing what would become the U.S. highway system. Avery used a little known trail from the California Gold Rush that ran through Oklahoma, as he drew plans for what would become U.S. Highway 66. On November 11, 1926 a bill was signed in Washington creating the American Highway system. The 2,400-mile route winds from Chicago to Los Angeles, through the most romantic and celebrated portions of the American West.
