How To's & Step-By-Step Instructions

How to Apply Vinyl Decals

Steps:

  1. Clean the surface where your decal will be placed.
  2. Apply soapy water to that surface, using a spray bottle with lukewarm water and a few drops of liquid dishwashing detergent. The surface should be damp but not dripping.
  3. Remove the back of the decal to expose the sticky adhesive surface. (You may need to use a razor blade to slowly and carefully start separating the decal from its backing at some point along the edge.)
  4. Apply the decal on top of the damp, soapy area and position your decal as you want it.
  5. Push out the excess water with a squeegee or soft sponge, going from the center of the decal past the edges, to form a good bond.

While you're waiting for your new decal to dry, please take a look at additional decals that might interest you.

How to apply *Face-down* Water Transfer Decals

Also Available in Printable PDF Format.

  1. The surface upon which the decal is to be mounted must be clean and smooth. Surface imperfections remain visible beneath the decal. The temperature of the work surface is important: DO NOT apply to a COLD surface. If necessary warm the surface with a heat lamp or hair dryer.

  2. To remove the paper backing, soak in a shallow pan of warm water DECAL SIDE OF PAPER FACE UP. The water should contain 1 or 2 drops of liquid dish washing detergent, this helps the decal “slide”. IMPORTANT: SOAK IN WATER FOR ONLY 10 SECONDS. DO NOT LET THE DECAL “CURL” WHILE SOAKING. After 10 Seconds of, pull the decal out of the water and lay it on a flat counter top or table for 3 to 5 minutes.

  3. The decal is ready for application when you can slide it sideways on its paper backing. CAUTION: The decal can tear if pulled to hard.

  4. Wet the surface to which the decal will be applied using some of the warm soapy water.

  5. DO NOT TRY TO PICK THE DECAL OFF THE PAPER. Instead, carry the paper (with decal still attached) to the surface to which it will be applied. IMPORTANT: APPLY TO SURFACE WITH DECAL SIDE OF PAPER FACING DOWN SO THAT THE PAPER IS ON TOP OF THE DECAL AS YOU LAY IT ON THE SURFACE. Place the decal in the approximate position you want, pat down on the paper gently then carefully “slide” the paper off of the decal.

  6. Use a wetted pad of soft cloth on the surface of the decal to work trapped air and water from under the decal. Work from the center outward. The decal will remain moveable until all air and water are removed, and the decal sticks. Check position of decal frequently as you work!

  7. View decal across a low-angle light to check for any remaining air or water bubbles. A stubborn bubble that refuses to move outward can be deflated with a needle.

  8. We strongly recommend clear-coating over these decals. Consult with your local supplier for application instructions, and let them know that these are lacquer-based water-transfer decals.
